The great lakes are the most important source of WATER and need to be protected. We can substitute oil but not WATER.

WHY IS THE ARMY CORPS SUPPORTING ENBRIDGE? ITS REPUTATION AND HISTORY SHOW THAT IT CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO DO HDD DRILLING SAFELY IN THE STRAITS. AND THEN YOU DUMP ALL THE RISK ONTO MI TAXPAYERS FOR A FOREIGN COMPANY? WHOM ARE YOU WORKING FOR?

I'm against the tunnel. Horizontal drilling of this magnitude is something this area doesn't needs. With all the problems horizontal drilling has caused to ground water supplies in every state it's been utilized in, Michigan can't afford to lose it's fresh waters. All our underground springs and the way all these interconnect, if there is any accident, it would spread throughout our environment. The devastation this would cause could effect our livelihood as a tourist destination. Not only fishing and boating, but Mackinaw Island could be affected long term.
I did an extensive report about the Alberta Sands that are transported through this pipeline. It seems to me that Canada could just as easily pipe this through Canada instead of through parts of the U.S.A. and back into Canada to be processed. It doesn't benefit Americans in any way.
On top 9f this Nbridge hasn't been transparent about their multiple leaks, fractured pipes or spills.
Please don't do this. It's time this problem is removed from our waterways. Thank you, God bless

They've been talking about the tunnel for years, and all of a sudden it's this HDD drilling?
Enbridge cannot safely perform HDD drilling in the Straits of Mackinac. Their track record of frac-outs in their Line 3 expansion project demonstrates this.
This project still forces Michigan taxpayers to carry all the risk for a foreign corporation. SAY NO!!!!!

This is a bait and switch by Enbridge and the Army Corps of Engineers, after focusing on the tunnel for years.

I wish to comment on Enbridge’s and the USACE’s most recent “alternative proposal” for replacement of the existing Line 5 pipeline across the Straits of Mackinac.

This proposal involves Horizontal Direct Drilling below the lake bottom. This is an extremely bad idea. HDD is used on a small scale to tunnel under roads and rivers. When Enbridge utilized these techniques to install Line 3 in Minnesota, they breached aquifers and collapsed stream beds.

Any breach off this proposed below level “pipeline in a tunnel” would be catastrophic to the quality of the Great Lakes water, to the economies of the surrounding states, and to the fish and wildlife that depend on this natural resource.

If the tunnel collapsed with oil flowing through it, it would result in an underground oil spill beneath the lakes which would be impossible to mitigate. The likelihood of drilling fluid being released into the lakes is also quite high.

Enbridge’s reputation for inspecting and maintaining their pipelines has been tarnished for years— the Kalamazoo River spill being perhaps the most egregious example. Enbridge’s track record at discovering and reporting pipeline issues in the states where it operates have not reflected the actions of a “good corporate citizen.”

The alternatives proposed thus far have looked only at this problem from the perspective of economic benefit to the corporation. Must we risk our Great Lakes for their profits? There are alternatives to this dangerous idea, but they would all cost Enbridge a great deal of money. Why should the people of Michigan and the surrounding states bear the burden of risk?

The Great Lakes and its environment are irreplaceable.

Thank you.

Previous studies have shown that the floor of the Straits cannot successfully support the machinery needed to support tunnel construction. Any leak would travel to the Atlantic Ocean. Enbridge has leaked before and bought out residents along the Kalamazoo River, they cannot do that here.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has abruptly announced a supplemental Environmental Impact Statement process for the Line 5 replacement project. The supplemental EIS is focused on an HDD (horizontal directional drilling) project in the straits in addition to the EIS for the tunnel project.

We are stating our opposition to the supplemental viewing the EIS and submitting comments online to the Army Corps, due before December 5th.

Key Points:
1. This is a bait and switch by Enbridge and the Army Corps of Engineers, after focusing on the tunnel for years.
2. Enbridge cannot safely perform HDD drilling in the Straits of Mackinac, their track record of frac-outs in their Line 3 expansion project demonstrates this.
3. This project still forces Michigan taxpayers to carry all the risk for a foreign corporation.

Line 5 will eventually destroy the water quality in the Great Lakes. Don’t make a decision that you will regret.

Dear Army Corps of Engineers - as a grandmother of 8 grandchildren who have grown to love fishing and water sports it is imperative that I contact you about my sincere concerns for any new line 5 or continued use of the outdated line under the straits of Mackinaw. Please do not put our natural resources at risk of a horrible oil spill - Enbridge is not trustworthy nor vigilant to protect our natural resources
Please save our lakes for the generations to come - there is no “minor” oil spill only huge risk
Sincerely
Doreen Kresnak
