the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced a supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) process for the Line 5 replacement project in the Straits of Mackinac. This is a plan by the USACE in partnership with Enbridge Energy for a horizontal directional drilling project in the straits and is IN ADDITION to the DEIS for the tunnel project released earlier this year. First, Enbridge Energy cannot safely perform horizontal directional drilling drilling in the Straits of Mackinac based on their poor track record in their Line 3 expansion project. Furthermore, this project still forces Michigan taxpayers to carry all the risk for on a project by a foreign corporation that would not be held accountable nor have to live with results.

Everyone knows that Oil and Water do not mix. Please don't drill, or tunnel, under our GREAT Lakes.

The fact remains that Line 5 was a mistake from the beginning. However, existing contracts allow its presence. That’s why I wholeheartedly SUPPORT the tunnel project to protect the Line, ergo the Straits of Mackinac, from damage of any future eruption.

This is a bait and switch by Enbridge and the Army Corps of Engineers, after focusing on the tunnel for years.
Enbridge cannot safely perform horizontal directional drilling in the Straits of Mackinac. Their track record of frac-outs in their Line 3 expansion project demonstrates this.

We do not need this in our Straits of Mackinac. Any spill would be a disaster!

A horizontal drilling project is not safe for Michigan, Enbridge has a terrible track record, and it will cost Michigan taxpayers a lot to fix things when it causes harm. The straits of Mackinac are too important to risk for foreign drilling. Risking contaminating the great lakes is unacceptable.

Enbridge cannot safely perform HDD drilling in the Straits of Mackinac; their track record of frac-outs in their Line 3 expansion project demonstrates this. Enbridge is responsible for at least 28 frac outs that took place during Line 3 pipeline construction. Line 3 is a pipeline expansion that carries tar sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin. The 1,097 mile pipeline includes a 337-mile stretch across northern Minnesota, undeniably posing a serious and unnecessary risk to lakes and streams. Drilling fluid was released at 12 river crossings in Minnesota, violating the MPCA's 401 Water Quality Certification.

This project still forces Michigan taxpayers to carry all the risk for a foreign corporation.

Most importantly, no risk is worth harming the beautiful Great Lakes, the home of over 20% of all the fresh water in the WORLD! Not to mention, if we care about humanity and Mother Nature, we have to get off of ALL fossil fuels.

I am not an expert, but I do take pride in being a citizen deeply concerned about the potential impacts of this project. Having done some research, I now know that there is ZERO benefit to the citizens of Michigan from this project. However, we as Michiganders assume 100% of the risk, because we live here! In my opinion we should have zero tolerance for ANY project of this scale that has the risk of such catastrophic outcomes if and when it fails. Add to this the shaky reliability record of Enbridge and I say a resounding NO to this project

I am writing to express my opposition to Enbridge's Line 5 across the Straits of Mackinac. I am opposed to its current state as well as a concrete tunnel or horizontally drilled tunnel. Any type of pipeline crossing between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron is too dangerous. Enbridge has already polluted Michigan extensively with its pipeline leak into the Kalamazoo River. The risk to a pipeline of any type across the Straights of Mackinac is just too risky, and I vehemently oppose it.
