Enbridge DOES NOT have the safety and quality of engineering track record to support a project this high stakes. A spillage or frack-out in the Mackinac Straights endangers the ecosystem of every single Great Lake, and jeopardizes the beauty, wildlife, and industry reliant on these waters. There is NO justification for the authorization of a FOREIGN energy company to put the all the risk of this project onto the backs of Michigan taxpayers. Leave our lakes ALONE.

Hello, Enbridge agreed in 1953 to the sunset clause in their use of line 5, they have renigged on that , they are now trying to push another lie about being responsible for the cleanup in the event of a spill or disaster, Michigan taxpayers should not be financially responsible for Enbridge accidents, Enbridge alone must be responsible. period

Enbridge has a history of unsafe oil and gas transportation pipelines in Michigan. They have not been forthcoming and honest regarding past incidents and problems. Allowing the installation of a new pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac would be a huge risk and a potential catastrophe to Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and to the immediate shorelines and waterways.

I am not a scientist. However, I have seen what projects of this size (Enbridge's Line 5) have done to the environment. Enbridge has not adequately responded to the spills that have already occurred in the past . Therefore, I do not believe their behavior will be any different in the future. The U.S. Corps of Engineers is better off paying attention to U.S. projects that will benefit the US population, not Enbridge's Canadian corporate structure. We do not need more environmental disasters. Enbridge's history, not just the content of their application, should play a role in the corps' decision regarding the tunnel.

I want to register my opposition to building a tunnel carrying oil under the turbulent Mackinaw Straits. A new tunnel does little to prevent a catastrophic oil spill. The rest of Line 5 remains 20 plus years beyond its expiration date. A tunnel perpetuates the inevitable while creating its own risks. Canadian Oil for Canadian profits pits our forests and waters at risk. Time to shut it down.

To the USACE,

I pastor two small rural churches in Berrien County, Michigan. As a faith leader, I am called to ask how Line 5 and the Line 5 tunnel will sow positive things for our community and the wider world. Instead, I find myself wondering how much money it takes to steal precious things like our beloved Great Lakes. Even this far south, I have been amazed at how many Enbridge ads inundate my day to tell me how much this pipeline and the tunnel are for me, my family, and my community. So what I imagine is that Enbridge has sought to buy you, put a price tag on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, to seek out your favor to bring them more and more profit.

I wish I was not so suspect. But I cannot imagine a Canadian fossil fuel company being given so much latitude after what they did in Marshall and the continuing leaks and exposures with Line 5. Their history is terrible. They have shown time and time again that they will not be honest, that they will not be trustworthy with our shared resources. Instead, the Great Lakes are not valued by them. They have become a means to their end. And their end comes at a tremendous price to all of us. They would lock in fossil fuel production. Line 5 will burst it is just a matter of when. And time and time again tunnel experts tell us that a Line 5 tunnel holds unimaginable risk with the roiling waters, inexperienced contractors, and the methane pockets found in the area.

So I am pleading with you to restore my trust in people like you who serve not only Michigan but all of our country. Please do put a price tag on devastation. Please make me believe that there are things more valuable than the profit of a fossil fuel giant like Enbridge.

You also know that the twelve tribes who were at the negotiating table have backed away from negotiation. They experience nothing but lies, delay, and deception from Enbridge. In Wisconsin, Enbridge is in de facto trespass after the Bad River tribe told them to leave after their agreement lapsed. Once again, I am furious that the law and Native relationships are not being honored in favor of Enbridge's profit.

We now have the technologies to move away from Enbridge. Time and time again it has been shown that the United States and the State of Michigan do not need Enbridge fossil fuels to support the Upper Peninsula and its energy needs. If Enbridge, Line 5, and this tunnel are not stopped, this will be an ecological disaster generations will look back on asking why our leaders did not know better. Please do not be part of a story that ends up despoiling the Great Lakes, these our mothers and sisters.

Thank you,
Rev. Mike Mulberry

We do not want horizontal exploration or drilling under the purest water in the US. This plan is being pushed forward without sufficient environmental impact studies, and protection. We do not want this.

To whom it may concern
I am concerned about the safety of the aging current pipeline, at risk of being compromised every moment it is running.
The geology of the Straights of Mackinaw is complex. Risks include earthquakes, (fault line, Great Lakes) salt deposits/caverns, contamination from construction, both in the water and the surrounding areas (Mackinac City, St. Iganace) which are top tourist destinations and create revenue for both the state and local merchants. Fishing would be impacted by the chemicals used in construction. In short, the proposed tunnel project is not feasible in cost, construction, not withstanding the possibility of a disaster that could be prevented and the astronomical costs associated with the cleanup of such.
Thank you for your time.

Shut down Line 5. Do not approve the tunnel. The risk of environmental disaster is high, and the burden and cost of a spill disaster, and the environmental degradation from construction, will fall on public citizens. Enbridge receives all the benefits and profits, while all the costs will fall on local populations of people, and the local environment. This is socialized profit for a private, non-US corporation, while the costs will be suffered by the citizens of the Great Lakes States. This plan also violates indigenous rights. We do not want this.
