Extreme weather events and Earth warming stem directly and indirectly from fossil fuels used at every expanding human population scale. The planet and its oceans are big, but yet they are finite. Data shows that 8+ billion people aspiring for consumer economies like the G-7 countries is impractical and ill-advised. Every tank of gasoline adds carbon to the atmosphere. Therefore all effort, corporate and (inter)governmental, must shift away from petrochemical business. Line 5 should cease operations, no matter how well engineered a tunnel is built. Minimizing oil spills and possible (domestic) terror attacks is a tiny problem compared to the Earth systems degrading daily and cumulatively. The famous image of people worried about rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic comes to mind: Stop Line Five. No permitting, no tunnel, no Line Five.
