l am writing to urge the Army Corps to reject a rushed approval of the Line 5 tunnel, and to pause all approvals until a full environmental review is completed—including assessments of climate impacts, Indigenous rights, and public health.

It is crucial that this project, which poses risks to the Great Lakes, our climate, and our future, undergo a comprehensive risk assessment. The supposed “energy emergency” used to justify fast-tracking this project is false and politically motivated, and should not override public safety and environmental protections. Approving this tunnel would lock us into decades of fossil fuel dependency, exacerbating the climate and public health crises; it must be thoroughly assessed for its greenhouse gas emissions and health impacts before proceeding.

Then there is the issue of the feasibility of this tunnel’s construction. There are many tunnel experts who have reviewed Enbridge’s plans who are concerned about the logistics of placing a tunnel under the lakebed, considering it to be complicated, dangerous, and technically challenging. Experts also share concerns for the workers who are subjected to the dangerous pipeline construction and operations. An oil spill in the Great Lakes would be catastrophic for drinking water, wildlife, and Michigan’s economy. More than 1.3 million jobs, equating to $82 billion in wages, are directly tied to the Great Lakes.

The Line 5 tunnel project has not undergone a comprehensive risk assessment, which is crucial for a project that poses risks to the Great Lakes, our climate, and our future.

Tribal nations and Indigenous communities have not been meaningfully consulted. Their rights, treaties, and voices must be honored.

This is way too important to take a chance of this magnitude!

The Line 5 tunnel should NOT be built! The entire pipeline should be de-commissioned! It is 20 years over life expectancy and crosses many wetlands, rivers, lakes and streams. In fact it crosses directly underneath several navigable rivers! If this pipeline was to rupture anywhere in Michigan, it would be catastrophic to millions of people’s drinking water, lifestyles and devastating to the wildlife and environment! Michigan does not need this pipeline. It only serves Canada and was built as a shortcut around the Great Lakes. Please do not approve this permit and decommission the entire pipeline. Thank You.

I think that we need to move the line 5 pipeline from its current location to a tunnel that would be safe under the current pipeline location.

Enbridge’s proposal to run a hazardous liquids pipeline through a confined underground tunnel has never been attempted anywhere else in the world, and experts warn it could cause an explosion in the Straits. Enbridge is responsible for the million-gallon oil spill into the Kalamazoo River in 2010, and more recently for the largest oil spill recorded in Wisconsin history. From President Whitney Gravelle of the Bay Mills Indian Community:
“The Straits of Mackinac are not just a waterway; they are the heart of creation for Anishinaabe people and a vital source of life for all who depend on the Great Lakes. An oil spill here would be devastating, not only to our way of life but to the entire region,” said President Gravelle. “This fight is about more than just one pipeline—it’s about protecting our waters, our treaties, and our future. We cannot allow corporate interests to dictate the fate of the Great Lakes for another century.”
Having grown up in WI and now living in MI I am standing against this tunnel and standing up to protect the health and safety of the Great Lakes for now and future generations.

Build the damn pipeline already. Our Great Lakes State needs the energy it will provide and it will cause zero to none problems for our beautiful state.

Allowing line 5 is destructive and selfish. We can’t eat money. Allwing this will pollute our air and water and soils which will decrease biodiversity and environmental resilience, which does in fact directly effect every single person regardless of wealth or social status. When our food won’t grow, our shorelines are unusable and our air unbreathable you can take a look at those who imitate project with clear and obvious risks and persue them anyways for the financial gain. You are what’s wrong with our world. Make the right choice and protect our environment so that your family and loved ones can have a clean and healthy environment to live in. Rather than funding a project like this turn to long term sustainable projects that cut costs and have less negative impact! Loss of biodiversity through destruction and pollution affects EVERYONE. Keystone species are all around us and destroying one can have an incredibly negative effect on all aspects of the environment so I urge you to protect natural life and invest elsewhere.

I believe that the permit for the proposed tunnel for the Line 5 pipeline should be granted as soon as possible. I believe it is a real solution for the environmental concerns that many have by running the pipelines through a waterproof tunnel under the straights. Certainly fail safe safety valves could be put into place to shut off flow if there is any situation that warranted such an action. Certainly Michigan is dependent upon the energy that flows through this pipeline and for future growth of our state. Energy is absolutely essential for the growth of Michigan, and as a farmer; reasonably priced and readily available energy is absolutely essential for my farming operation!
